Having good eyesight is very important.
Good vision helps you to see far and wide.
Its very important that we maintain healthy eyesight to perform different tasks and activities.
As a person starts growing older he might feel some aging around his eyes.
Just aging does not mean that we will lose his eyesight forever.
There are many aged people of more than 80 years who continue to maintain good eyesight.
Trataka Eye Exercises:
In yoga, trataka is a technique devised by the ancient sages to improve eyesight.
It is a shuddhikriya or a purification process to cleanse the eyesight and help in the silencing of the mind in concentration.
Sit with your back straight.
Keep your eyes fixed on an object without winking till tears start streaming down your face.
The small object can be the flame of an oil lamp, or an image or a picture or the letter AUM.
This object should be placed in the line of sight at a distance of about four to six feet.
You can also do this kriya without any object in front of you.
Having an object is not necessary.
Just stare in front of you at the wall without moving the eyeballs or eyelids.
Ensure that you stare at a certain point on the wall.
Before starting this exercise, you can start off by moving the eyes without moving the head, where you roll your eyeballs up and down, sideways and from corner to corner diagonally.
Initially, you can make this movement with open eyes and then repeat them with closed eyes.
This will give the requisite exercise to the eye muscles.
This is then followed by trataka.
Trataka makes the eyes clear, improves eyes and silences the mind.
Over a period, you will experience the silence of the mind.
If you want to meditate, start with trataka to silence the mind and then go to the meditation.
This way, you will reap the benefits of meditation.
Since you are exercising the eye muscles, they become stronger.
You can perform this kriya daily without any harmful effects.
Hatha Yoga Eye Exercises:
Close both the eyes very tightly by shutting the lids firmly.
Open them suddenly which allows you to feel the stretch.
Once open arch your brows and stretch your face. Repeat this several times a day.
Look as far as possible and inhale then look down as far as possible and exhale. Blink your eyes more than a dozen times.
Do the same procedure by turning to your left and right then diagonally up to left, down to right, up to right and down to left followed by rapid blinking.
Rotate your eyes in all the directions.
Slowly and steadily concentrate one eye at a time.
Do this exercise more than a dozen times and try doing this with your eyes shut.
By using palming which can be stated as a revised version of the thousand-year-old yoga tradition known was Hatha Yoga.
It relieves strain and stress from your mind and eyes which needs the required break. For this you have to warm your hands by rubbing them together vigorously.
Once its warm cover the eye without touching the eyelids.
This relaxes the nerves and helps in blood circulation.
You can also try sunning which means to use sun’s light for your eyes.
Move your head from side to side for the heat to benefit the eyes.
After a while try stretching the eyes to allow more sunlight to your eyes.
Directly looking at the sun is never good.
It is great method to reduce light sensitivity.
Eye Exercises – Boost The Power of Your Optic Muscles:
The eyes contain many small muscles, and there is no doubt that eye exercises can do little harm to your eyes, but can they actually be of benefit?
In essence, you can expect to perform some simple exercises for about half an hour a day. These can involve some of the following:-
To rest and relax your eyes, sit comfortably in front of a table, resting your elbows on a stack of cushions high enough to bring your palms easily to your eyes without stooping forward or looking up.
Close your eyes and cover them with your cupped palms to exclude light, avoiding pressure on the sockets.
Breathe slowly and evenly, relaxing and imagining deep blackness.
Begin by doing this for 10 minutes, two or three times a day.
Relax and keep the eyes mobile.
Stand up and focus on a distant point, swaying gently from side to side.
Repeat 100 times daily, blinking as you sway.
Blinking cleans and lubricates the eyes, which is especially important if you spend a lot of time in front of a computer.
You may be asked to have a ‘colour day.’ Choose a colour and look out for it throughout the day.
When you see it, be aware of the colour rather than the form.
For example, if it’s a red truck, experience the shade of red, not the truck.
One exercise which is know as “tromboning” has you hold a small object again, starting at arm’s length.
Then you need to breath in and move the object slowly closer to your face, until it touches your nose.
You are then required to breath out, looking at the object as you again move it away from your face.
Hence, the notion of “Tromboning”.
For example, there is a technique referred to as the “blur reading” technique, which asks you to turn a magazine upside-down at a distance where the words are not distinct.
Then, you are supposed to choose one word and focus your attention around it, to see if you can identify any of the letters.
Ways To Improve Your Eyesight:
By adopting various patterns of life we can give our eyes a much-needed boost. Bringing changes in your lifestyle and in your eating habits will help your eyes.
Food and Diet:
Consuming good amount of apple and grapes helps in improving your eyesight.
Vitamin A is very good for enhancing your eyesight.
Carrots have good quantity of vitamin A which proves to be one of the useful natural treatments.
Cucumber juice does wonders for your eyesight as it tries to improve it immensely.
Add spinach in your daily diet as Spinach contains iron, vitamin A, B and C.
It purifies your blood, increases the hemoglobin and improves your eyesight.
You can find good source of vitamin A in turnip, milk cream, fresh milk, cheese, butter, tomatoes, lettuce, cabbage, soya beans, green peas, oranges and dates.
An ayurvedic medicine name Triphala is considered to work immensely in favor of your eyes.
Consuming blueberry juice also considered to be very useful for your eyes.
Perform Netra Basti which is bathing your eyes with clarified butter to reduce eye strain and to improve eyesight.
There Are Different Ways To Protect Your Eyes.
You need to visit your eye doctor regularly.
It would advisable to consult an ophthalmologist if you experience eye aging, eye swelling, and irritation in the eyes, color blindness or any other eye related problems.
Its very important that you follow different disease prevention techniques.
There are different eye diseases that can lead to permanent loss of eyesight.
Few of such diseases are Glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and diabetes. Most of these diseases are incurable.
However, you can still prevent them if you take regular and timely care.
Avoid exposing your eyes to the harmful ultra violet rays of the sun.
Protect your eyes from the suns rays as much as you can.
One of the best ways to protect your eyes from different problems is by wearing safety glasses.
You need to wear suitable glasses especially if you are working with hazardous and harmful air-borne materials.
